Sheet Metal Engineering and Design for Manufacturability

DFM review and engineering support for OEM sheet metal programs

ELO Engineering's in-house engineering team works with OEM and industrial manufacturers to review sheet metal designs before production begins — catching manufacturability issues at the quote stage, where they're inexpensive to fix, rather than after the first article runs. Our DFM process is built around your print: we review geometry, material selection, bend radii, tolerances, hardware placement, and feature feasibility against ELO's in-house fabrication capabilities.

Most engineering engagement happens at quoting. When you send us prints, our team evaluates your design against our laser cutting, turret punching, press brake forming, welding, and finishing capabilities — and flags anything that will add cost, risk quality, or create downstream assembly issues. Where we can recommend a design change that improves manufacturability without compromising function, we will.

CAD and design capabilities

ELO Engineering's engineering team works in SolidWorks and supports CAD file import in standard formats including SolidWorks (.sldprt, .sldasm), IGES (.igs), STEP (.stp), and DXF. Our nesting and programming software integrates directly with our fabrication floor, translating approved designs into programmed cut files without manual re-entry.

Capabilities list:

  • SolidWorks — 3D part and assembly modeling, design review, and drawing generation

  • CAD file import — SolidWorks, IGES, STEP, DXF, and other standard formats

  • 3D modeling and design review — part geometry validation against sheet metal forming constraints

  • Nesting and cut file programming — design-to-floor integration from approved prints to laser and punch programs

  • Bill of Materials (BOM) management — component tracking and documentation for multi-part assemblies

  • Design and document control — revision management and print control for production programs

What ELO's DFM review covers

When ELO Engineering reviews your sheet metal prints for manufacturability, we evaluate the following:

Geometry and form feasibility Bend radii, flange lengths, hole-to-edge distances, and feature clearances checked against our press brake tooling and turret punch capabilities. Parts designed outside standard forming constraints get flagged before they become first-article failures.

Material selection We confirm the specified material — mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or copper — is appropriate for the required operations, finish, and end-use environment. Where a substitution would reduce cost or improve performance, we'll note it.

Tolerance review Sheet metal fabrication has natural tolerance ranges by process. We review specified tolerances against what laser cutting, turret punching, and press brake forming can consistently deliver — and flag any dimensions that require secondary machining or special process controls.

Hardware and fastener placement PEM hardware, weld nuts, and fastener locations reviewed for insertion clearance, tooling access, and proximity to bends and edges.

Finish and coating compatibility Part geometry reviewed against pre-treatment, powder coating, and liquid painting requirements — blind holes, drainage, masking complexity, and hanging points considered.

ELO Engineering's engineering involvement doesn't end at the quote. For new programs, our team supports first article submission with dimensional reports and process documentation. For engineering change orders (ECOs), we manage print revisions through our document control system and revalidate affected operations before releasing to production.

Our Minneapolis facility runs engineering and fabrication under the same roof — which means the engineer reviewing your print is walking the same floor as the operators running your parts. Design decisions get validated against real tooling, real material behavior, and real production constraints, not theoretical manufacturing guidelines.
